Stephanie Murphy: Mica’s ‘Offensive Contribution’ from Gun Lobby Two Days After Pulse Nightclub Shooting Represents What’s Wrong with Washington

ORLANDO – Businesswoman, educator, and former national security specialist Stephanie Murphy today sharply criticized Republican Congressman John Mica after news reports revealed he accepted a $1,000 contribution only two days after the June attack on Pulse Nightclub, a gay nightclub in downtown Orlando. Murphy is running for Congress in Florida’s Seventh Congressional District, which includes all of Seminole County and northern Orange County, including Winter Park and much of downtown Orlando.

Statement from Stephanie Murphy:

“I am dismayed and outraged that Congressman John Mica accepted a $1,000 contribution from the gun lobby only two days after the Pulse Nightclub massacre in Orlando where 49 people were killed and 53 were wounded. This offensive contribution is exactly what is wrong with Washington – and explains why Congressman Mica continues to oppose and vote against commonsense, bipartisan gun security measures despite representing an area that is home to the largest mass shooting in American history.

“In Congress, I will bring both Republicans and Democrats together to pass reasonable and responsible gun security measures that make our communities and our families safer, including comprehensive criminal background checks and measures that prevent suspected terrorists on watch lists from buying weapons. It’s just common sense.”

Stephanie Murphy: John Mica Ignores Bipartisan Calls To Return To Congress To Combat Zika

After at least 14 people have been infected with the Zika virus and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention issued an unprecedented travel warning, telling pregnant women and their partners not to travel to a small community just north of downtown Miami, there has been a bipartisan effort for Congress to return to session to pass a funding measure to combat Zika.

Governor Rick Scott stated:

“I am profoundly disappointed that Washington does not share in our commitment and has continued to play politics with the health and safety of our families.”

Candidate for Congress, businesswoman, and former national security specialist Stephanie Murphy issued the following statement condemning Congressman Mica for putting politics before the people of Florida:

“I join the bipartisan calls for Congress to immediately return to session and pass a funding measure to protect Florida families from Zika. Career politician Congressman Mica is choosing to once again stand with the Trump-wing of the Republican Party. He sided with them when he blocked a vote on legislation that would have provided the resources needed to combat Zika. And now he’s ignoring the bipartisan calls to return to session to address this urgent public health crisis. Central Florida deserves results, not more politics as usual.”

Stephanie Murphy: John Mica Should Denounce Trump and Stand with Gold Star Families

ORLANDO – Donald Trump’s offensive remarks toward Captain Humayun Khan’s family are yet another example of why he would be a dangerous and reckless president. Captain Humayun Khan was an American hero who was tragically killed while bravely serving in Iraq. While Republicans across the country have expressed outrage at Trump’s indefensible attack, Congressman Mica — who has been extremely supportive of Trump — has remained silent. Former POW and Republican Senator John McCain’s statement makes clear that Trump’s comment has offended people across party lines.

Senator John McCain stated:

“In recent days, Donald Trump disparaged a fallen soldier’s parents. He has suggested that the likes of their son should not be allowed in the United States — to say nothing of entering its service. I cannot emphasize enough how deeply I disagree with Mr. Trump’s statement.”

Candidate for Congress and former national security specialist Stephanie Murphy issued the following statement condemning Congressman Mica’s refusal to denounce Trump.

“After working as a national security specialist and planning counterterrorism efforts at the Pentagon, I’ve witnessed the sacrifices made by our military, veterans, and their family members. Donald Trump’s offensive comments demonstrate he would be a dangerous and divisive president. And Congressman Mica’s refusal to denounce Trump demonstrates that he’ll continue to do exactly what he’s done the last 20 years in Congress: play partisan politics. This is disappointing, but not surprising, considering Congressman Mica is a career politician who said he “loved Trump.”

ORLANDO – Today, Stephanie Murphy announced her campaign for Florida’s 7th Congressional District. Stephanie is a wife, mother, professor, executive and former national security specialist at the Department of Defense who currently lives in Winter Park, Florida.

“My life’s story is a testament to the American Dream and what can happen when hard work is combined with opportunity,” said Murphy. “My family and I were Vietnamese refugees, and my parents worked multiple jobs to provide for our family. My brother and I were the first in our family to go to college thanks to scholarships and Pell Grants. I want to bring my experience to Washington on behalf of Central Florida’s families to create more educational and economic opportunities so that everyone has a chance at the American dream,” said Murphy.

Stephanie was an infant when her parents escaped by boat from the communist regime in Vietnam. Upon earning a degree from the College of William & Mary, she joined Deloitte Consulting.  After 9/11, Stephanie went back to graduate school at Georgetown to follow her heart into public service.  She received a Presidential Management Fellowship, which led her into a number of policy roles at the Department of Defense.  In 2008, Stephanie moved to Orlando to return to a career in business and focus on starting a family.

“It’s clear that families in Central Florida need Washington working on their behalf to create opportunities for them and their children.  With my experience in national security, the business world, and academia, I will bring a strong set of skills and a unique combination of perspectives to Washington to work in the interest of my community,” Murphy continued.

Stephanie is currently a business professor at Rollins College, an executive at Sungate Capital and remains active in her community.  She has worked with numerous organizations and served on both local and national boards, including term membership on the Council of Foreign Relations, and as a volunteer with Support Our Scholars, an organization that helps economically challenged women attend and complete college.
