“No community should ever go through an attack like we experienced here in Orlando at Pulse Nightclub, and we must do everything in our power to prevent these types of massacres from happening again. I will use my experience as a national security specialist to help keep our nation and our communities safe.” – Stephanie Murphy

Stephanie believes a stronger America means confronting the threats abroad without blinking and without undermining our values. It also means protecting Americans here at home by tackling gun violence and supporting our law enforcement community with the resources they need to keep our schools and communities safe.

Following the September 11th attacks on our country, Stephanie felt called to public service. She left a job in the corporate world and eventually became a national security specialist for the U.S. Secretary of Defense at the Pentagon, where she worked alongside our men and women in uniform on a wide range of security issues including counterterrorism, foreign military relations, strategic planning, and international disaster relief. In fact, Stephanie helped coordinate the U.S. Armed Forces’ response to the historic 2004 Asian tsunami, helping to remind the world of America’s generosity.

While at the Pentagon, Stephanie received numerous awards for her distinguished service, including the Secretary of Defense Medal for Exceptional Civilian Service. Stephanie worked with both Democrats and Republicans in her work at the Defense Department, because that’s what it took to help keep our nation safe. They didn’t bicker, because the stakes were too high to play political games.

Stephanie knows America must work with our allies, including NATO and Israel, and that we must be strong and smart to destroy ISIS and protect America – not reckless and rash. She will ensure our military has the resources they need to do their job, and our military knows how to do their job better than anyone else in the world.

We must also do everything we can to keep Americans safe here at home, and that’s why Stephanie is leading efforts to combat the gun violence epidemic in our country. in fact, she introduced legislation that will repeal the Dickey Amendment, allowing the federal government to research the causes and find solutions to reduce gun violence in America. With preschool children facing lockdowns to deal with potential shooters and innocent people fearing another mass shooting like the one at Pulse Nightclub here in Orlando, Stephanie is fed up with politicians putting politics ahead of solutions.

We must keep weapons out of the hands of those who wish to wreak havoc on our communities. For instance, Stephanie supports universal background checks to keep guns out of the hands of criminals, suspected terrorists and the severely mentally ill, including closing the gun show loophole. She also supports increasing resources to address mental health through both early detection and treatment. These are all commonsense measures that are overwhelmingly supported by the American people of both political parties and will help keep our nation safe.

In response to the largest mass shooting in American history this summer at Pulse Nightclub in Orlando, a group of people affected by the tragedy came together to create the Pride Fund to End Gun Violence PAC – an effort to help elect pro-LGBTQ candidates at the national level who support sensible gun reforms. As someone who lives in a region with countless families directly impacted by the Pulse tragedy, Stephanie is proud to have received the inaugural endorsement of this group and she will help lead the efforts to strengthen LGBTQ rights and pass long-overdue commonsense gun security legislation in the U.S. Congress.
